Your Muscles Are Amazing But Are Your Bodybuilding Supplments Damaging Your Teeth?

Herman Kim

Bodybuilding can be an addictive hobby. Not only do you have a killer body that is the envy of all your friends, but you are currently in tip-top health. If you are now considering entering the competition side of bodybuilding, you need to make sure every single part of your body is up to the scrutiny that lies ahead. One part of your body that you cannot work on at the gym is your smile, but this may not be in the best condition if you are taking bodybuilding supplements.

What Do Bodybuilding Supplements Have To Do With Teeth?

The ingredients in bodybuilding supplements can impact the teeth because of the amount of sugar that is contained in the supplements. Sugar is useful to a bodybuilder because, after weightlifting and exercising, the natural sugar level of the body is depleted. Therefore, bodybuilding supplements after exercise can restore these levels and help to fuel the body to get through the day.

The problem with the sugar in these supplements is that it can lead to tooth decay. The more sugar that is in the mouth, the more acid that will be produced by bacteria who use the sugar for fuel. The more acid you have, the bigger the chance you will have an issue with enamel erosion and tooth decay.

What Can Be Done To Protect Your Teeth?

There are three things you can do to make sure your smile is as bright and defined as the muscles in your body:

  • Let your dentist know that you are using bodybuilding supplements and follow their advice as to the best schedule for regular cleaning. It may well be you need to attend to this more often than non-bodybuilders because of the sugars in the supplements.
  • Follow strict cleaning practices at home so you can reduce the amount of sugar that sits in your mouth during the day. Brush, floss and use mouthwash at least twice a day to keep your oral sugars contained.
  • Speak to your dentist about cosmetic work that needs doing well in advance of booking yourself in for your first competition. Not only can they correct gaps or chips in teeth, but they can also use the most current tooth whitening procedures to make sure your smile glows when you are up on the stage.

Don't forget your teeth when you are getting ready for your first bodybuilding competition. Your dentist knows just how to make sure they light up on stage just like your muscles will. For more tips, contact a clinic like DC Dental.
